The most celebrated of all the world's whisky-producing countries, Scotland is almost synonymous with whisky itself. The Irish and the Scots still dispute the claim to having invented the water of life, but what is beyond doubt is that Scotland developed the world's most influential whisky industry, and remains the benchmark against which many other whiskies are measured. While Ireland may point to the oldest surviving licensed whiskey distillery, Scotland can claim a remarkable concentration of long-established distilleries and one of the most fully developed whisky traditions globally.

Scotland was also central to two of the most significant developments in modern whisky-making: the large-scale adoption of continuous distillation for grain whisky, and the rise of blended whisky, in which grain and malt whiskies are combined to create a consistent and accessible style. These innovations helped Scotch become the dominant international whisky category for much of the modern era.

By law, Scotch whisky must be mashed, fermented, distilled and matured in Scotland from cereals, water and yeast; it must be matured in oak casks for a minimum of three years, bottled at a minimum strength of 40% ABV, and retain the flavour and character of its raw materials. Current UK law recognises five categories of Scotch whisky: Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Single Grain Scotch Whisky, Blended Scotch Whisky, Blended Malt Scotch Whisky and Blended Grain Scotch Whisky. These categories were established in the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009, which remain the foundation of Scotch whisky's legal definition today.
