Blair Athol is a Highland single malt distillery in Pitlochry, Perthshire, with origins usually traced to the late eighteenth century, when it operated under the name Aldour. It was later renamed Blair Athol and has become one of the most picturesque distilleries in Diageo's Scotch whisky portfolio, known for its ivy-covered buildings and long-standing visitor appeal.
Although Blair Athol is a single malt in its own right, much of its production has traditionally been used for blending, most notably as an important component in Bell's. Its best-known official release is the 12 Year Old in Diageo's Flora & Fauna series, while independent bottlers have also helped showcase the distillery's character through a wider variety of ages and cask styles.
The whisky is typically rich, malty and full-bodied, with notes of dried fruit, toffee, nuts, baking spice, orange peel and gentle oak. Sherry-cask maturation suits the spirit particularly well, often drawing out darker fruit, chocolate and a slightly old-fashioned Highland depth.
Blair Athol's appeal lies in its balance of charm and substance. It may be better known to many drinkers through blends than as a heavily promoted single malt, but its official and independent bottlings reveal a generous Highland style with warmth, weight and quiet distinction.
