Balblair is one of the oldest distilleries in the Highlands, owned by Inver House Distillers and located close to the Dornoch Firth in Edderton, Ross-shire. For many years much of its output was destined for blends, but in the modern era the distillery has steadily developed a stronger reputation as a single malt in its own right. Established in 1790, Balblair sources its water from the Allt Dearg Burn and remains closely associated with a patient, traditional approach to whisky-making.

A major part of Balblair's modern identity was shaped by the decision to present its whisky as vintages rather than conventional age statements, an approach introduced in 2007 and designed to emphasise the character of individual distillation years. That phase has itself now passed into the distillery's history: in 2019 Balblair returned to an age-statement range, and today its core collection features bottlings such as the 12, 15, 18, 21 and 25 Year Old.

Throughout these changes, Balblair has developed a reputation for whisky of clarity, texture and natural character. The distillery's style is typically fruit-forward and elegant, with notes of citrus, orchard fruit, spice and honey, whilst cask selection adds layers of richness and depth across the range. The result is a distillery whose bottlings achieve a balance between individuality and a clear, recognisable house style.

Balblair remains a relatively modest distillery by industry standards, and current owner-group information places its capacity at around 1.6 million litres of alcohol per year. That scale, combined with its long history and distinctive Highland setting, has helped secure the distillery a quiet but increasingly established position amongst Scotland's more respected single malts.
