Armagnac

Armagnac is a French grape brandy produced in Gascony in southwestern France under an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. It boasts a lengthy history, with the region's production zone officially established in 1909 and the AOC production regulations set in 1936.

Armagnac and Cognac are both French grape brandies, but they originate from different regions and are generally produced using different methods. Armagnac is typically distilled once in a continuous Armagnac still, whilst Cognac is more commonly distilled twice in pot stills. In character, Armagnac is often described as fuller, more rustic and more expressive in its early years, whereas Cognac is often regarded as more refined and lighter in profile. The production approach is one of the primary reasons for this distinction.

Armagnac is produced from wine distilled into eau-de-vie, most commonly using the traditional continuous Armagnac still, although some producers also employ double distillation. Following distillation, the spirit is aged in oak casks, typically around 400 litres, primarily made from Gascon or Limousin oak. Producers then carefully monitor the ageing process, controlling both oak influence and eventual reduction to bottling strength.

Armagnac is typically rich, aromatic and full-bodied, often displaying notes of candied fruit, prune, apricot, orange peel, spice, mellow wood and dried fruit. Older expressions can also develop rancio and deeper nutty or savoury complexity. Different producers and styles vary, but warmth, fruit and oak depth remain central to the category.

After distillation, Armagnac is aged in oak casks, where it gradually develops colour, softness and aromatic complexity. Wood ageing contributes additional complexity and sweetness, and cellar conditions such as temperature and humidity play a crucial role in how the spirit matures over time. Armagnac may subsequently be reduced with aged petites eaux, a blend of Armagnac and distilled water prepared specifically for reduction.

Armagnac can be labelled by age category or by vintage. Since 2010, the industry has simplified age categories on labels, and a vintage Armagnac corresponds solely to the year of harvest. To be sold as a vintage, it must have spent at least 10 years in wood. You may also sometimes see the bottling date on the label, which helps indicate how long it was aged before being put into glass.

A vintage Armagnac comes from a single harvest year and is labelled with that year. A blended Armagnac combines eaux-de-vie of different ages or vintages to achieve a consistent house style, as found in categories such as VSOP or Hors d'Age. Vintage Armagnac is one of the category's distinctive characteristics, but blending remains very common and is essential to many producers' ranges.

Armagnac is often enjoyed neat, particularly older expressions where the complete aromatic profile can be savoured slowly. It also works well in cocktails and aperitif serves. In practice, younger Armagnacs tend to be more versatile in cocktails, whilst older bottlings are typically best enjoyed on their own.
