North British is a Scotch grain whisky distillery in the Gorgie area of Edinburgh, founded in 1885 by a group of leading blenders who wanted an independent source of grain spirit for blended whisky. It remains one of Scotland's major grain whisky producers, operating on a scale very different from the romantic image of small malt distilleries.
The distillery is owned by Lothian Distillers, a joint venture between Diageo and Edrington. Its whisky is produced primarily for blending, where grain spirit provides body, sweetness and balance alongside malt components. North British has been associated with major blended Scotch brands, and its output plays a significant role in the structure of the wider Scotch whisky industry.
As a single grain whisky, North British is most often seen through independent bottlings, frequently released at older ages. These whiskies can display the classic virtues of well-matured grain: vanilla, coconut, toffee, cereal sweetness, soft spice and polished oak, with long-aged examples developing richer notes of caramel, dried fruit, wax and gentle wood tannin.
