Dallas Dhu Whisky

Dallas Dhu is a closed Speyside single malt distillery near Forres in Moray, founded at the end of the nineteenth century during one of Scotch whisky's great building booms. Designed by Alexander Edward and built for Wright & Greig, it began production in 1899 and was created to supply malt whisky for blending rather than to become a prominent single malt brand.

The distillery later became part of the Distillers Company Limited and remained in production, with interruptions, until 1983. After closure it was preserved rather than demolished, reopening as a historic distillery site and museum under what is now Historic Environment Scotland. Plans have also been announced to bring distilling back to Dallas Dhu under Aceo Distillers Company, while retaining the site's heritage character.

As a whisky, Dallas Dhu is now seen mostly through older official and independent bottlings from remaining stocks. These can display a classic Speyside profile of malt, honey, apple, pear, vanilla, light spice and gentle oak, with mature examples developing richer notes of dried fruit, wax, polished wood and soft herbal complexity.

Dallas Dhu occupies an unusual place in Scotch whisky: no longer merely a lost distillery, but not yet fully understood as a revived one. Its surviving old bottlings offer a glimpse of a quieter Speyside style, while the site's preserved buildings and planned return to production give the name a continuing relevance beyond nostalgia.
