Nikka Whisky is one of the foundational names in Japanese whisky, built on Masataka Taketsuru's ambition to create whisky in Japan with genuine technical and stylistic depth. The company's first distillery, Yoichi in Hokkaido, was established in 1934, and its second, Miyagikyo near Sendai, followed in 1969, providing Nikka with two distinctly different malt distilleries at the core of its portfolio.
This dual-distillery approach remains fundamental to Nikka's identity. Yoichi is recognised for a firmer, more robust style, while Miyagikyo delivers a softer, more fragrant and refined character. Beyond its single malts, Nikka also produces grain whisky and leverages that diversity to excellent effect across blends and pure malts such as Taketsuru and From the Barrel, helping establish the house as one of the most distinctive and comprehensive whisky-makers in Japan.
What makes Nikka particularly compelling is the balance it achieves between heritage and variety. It is a historic producer with deep roots in the development of Japanese whisky, but also a brand whose current line-up remains varied, characterful and clearly influenced by location, production methods and blending expertise.
