The present Clynelish distillery stands on the northern coast of Sutherland and was built in 1967 as a modern expansion beside the original Clynelish distillery, whose name later passed into history as Brora. As part of a wave of post-war distillery construction and rebuilding, the new site shared something of the functional appearance of other large modernised distilleries of the era. It remains one of Diageo's most important malt producers, with a significant role not only as a single malt in its own right but also as a key component in the company's blended whiskies, particularly within the Johnnie Walker family.
Clynelish has long been held in high regard by whisky drinkers and is now widely regarded as one of the great distilleries of Scotland. Its whisky is among the most distinctive in the country, celebrated above all for its famous waxy texture, which pairs beautifully with notes of honey, tropical fruit, sea air and a dry, mineral edge. That combination gives Clynelish a character that is at once coastal, refined and deeply individual.
It is also a whisky that matures exceptionally well. While younger bottlings can already display clarity, texture and character, mature Clynelish has long been valued by enthusiasts for the way its waxy, mineral and fruit-led qualities develop over time. Older vintages, particularly those from the early 1970s, remain especially sought after and have helped establish the distillery's near-legendary status among collectors.
