Gin is a distilled spirit flavoured primarily with juniper berries, complemented by various botanicals that may include citrus peel, spices, herbs, roots and flowers. While juniper remains central to gin, the selection and balance of botanicals provides each bottle with its unique character, from crisp and classic to soft, floral or boldly contemporary.
Gin developed from Jenever, a Dutch spirit originating in the 17th Century and also referred to as junever, jeniever, genever or genièvre. From these beginnings, gin grew into one of the world's most popular and adaptable spirits, with styles spanning from traditional London Dry and Plymouth Gin to sweeter Old Tom expressions and modern craft gins featuring innovative botanical recipes.
Widely recognised as the key ingredient in a gin and tonic, gin works equally well in cocktails such as the Martini, Negroni and Tom Collins.
