Hakushu Whisky

Hakushu is Suntory's mountain-forest distillery, established in 1973 in Yamanashi Prefecture and recognised for a style that feels fresh, finely textured and gently smoky. Situated high in the forests of the Japanese Alps, it has become one of the defining names in Japanese single malt, delivering a lighter, more herbal and more delicately peated profile than many drinkers anticipate from the category.

This sense of freshness is fundamental to Hakushu's identity. The whisky is typically characterised by green fruit, soft smoke, minty or herbal notes and a clean, vivid finish, making it a natural contrast to the richer and often more overtly structured style associated with Yamazaki. The distillery's forest location, soft water and varied production methods have all contributed to a house style that feels distinctive, elegant and immediately recognisable.

The current range focuses on Hakushu Distiller's Reserve, 12 Year Old, 18 Year Old and 25 Year Old, with occasional limited editions and special releases appearing alongside them. Together they demonstrate the scope of the distillery's style, from bright and accessible to deeper, more mature and more contemplative, while maintaining the fresh, lightly smoky character that has made Hakushu one of Japan's most respected whiskies.
