Glenkinchie is a Lowland single malt distillery near Pencaitland in East Lothian, often associated with Edinburgh due to its proximity to the capital. Its origins date back to the 1820s and 1830s, when brothers John and George Rate were distilling in the area, though the distillery's history includes periods of closure, rebuilding and revival.
Today Glenkinchie is owned by Diageo and remains one of the key Lowland names in the company's Scotch whisky portfolio. It has long been recognised as the Lowland representative in the Classic Malts range, with the 12 Year Old as its principal official expression, supported by Distillers Edition releases, special bottlings and occasional older expressions.
The whisky is typically light, grassy and gently floral, with notes of lemon, apple, cereal, honey, vanilla and soft spice. Its large stills and Lowland production character help create a fresh, delicate spirit, while cask maturation can add creaminess, orchard fruit and a touch of polished oak without overwhelming the distillery's natural elegance.
