Cambus was a Lowland grain whisky distillery near Alloa in Clackmannanshire, with roots in the early nineteenth century. Founded by John Mowbray, it began in the malt whisky era before becoming an important grain distillery, producing the lighter spirit that helped support the rise of blended Scotch.
The distillery was one of the founding members of the Distillers Company Limited in 1877 and remained within the wider group that eventually became part of Diageo. Cambus closed in 1993 as grain whisky production was consolidated elsewhere, and distilling did not return. The site has since continued to play a role in the Scotch whisky industry through Diageo's cooperage and related cask operations.
As a single grain whisky, Cambus is now encountered only through remaining stocks, often bottled by independent bottlers at significant age. Mature examples can show vanilla, coconut, toffee, cereal sweetness, soft spice and polished oak, with older casks developing richer caramel, dried fruit, wax and gentle wood tannin.
Cambus offers drinkers a glimpse of the industrial backbone behind blended Scotch. It may lack the romance of a small malt distillery, but its surviving bottlings show how elegant, sweetly mature and quietly complex well-aged grain whisky can be.
