The legal classifications of Scotch whisky can appear confusing to newcomers, particularly because terms such as Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, Blended Scotch Whisky and Blended Grain Scotch Whisky sound deceptively similar. In practice, however, the distinctions are clear once one understands that the labels describe both the type of whisky involved and whether it originates from one distillery or several. Under current law, Scotch whisky is divided into five recognised categories, of which Blended Grain Scotch Whisky is one.
Simply put, Blended Grain Scotch Whisky is grain whisky - that is to say whisky made from grain other than malted barley - that has been distilled at multiple different Scottish distilleries. It has then been matured for no less than three years in casks stored in Scotland and bottled at a minimum strength of 40% ABV.
