Barbancourt is Haiti's most famous rum house, founded in 1862 by Dupré Barbancourt, who brought a Charentais approach to distillation from south-west France. Produced from pure sugarcane juice rather than molasses, it occupies a distinctive position between French-style rhum traditions and the particular character of Haitian rum.
The company remains closely associated with the Barbancourt and Gardère families, with Delphine Gardère now leading the house. Production is based in Haiti, where Barbancourt has invested in modernising its distillery while retaining key elements of its identity, including double distillation and ageing in French oak.
The range includes white cane-juice rum, 3 Star 4 Year Old, 5 Star 8 Year Old, 15 Year Old Estate Reserve and older or limited releases. The style is elegant, dry and aromatic, with younger bottlings showing fresh cane, citrus, vanilla and light spice, while older expressions develop dried fruit, oak, tobacco, orange peel, rancio and a polished, brandy-like depth.
Barbancourt offers a refined introduction to Haitian rum: less heavy than many molasses-led styles, but full of character, history and regional identity. Its best bottlings combine the freshness of cane juice with the structure of long ageing, making the house one of the most important names in Caribbean rum.
